The book aims to capture, describe and convey the current significance, the values and potentials of urban biodiversity and ecosystem services to scientists and professionals in the context of sustainable urban development and ongoing urbanization processes. Current developments, different approaches and future challenges in the competition of green spaces and urban land consumption in China and Germany are elaborated, discussed and illustrated within case studies and good practice examples. The strategic goal is a long-term appreciation of the potentials and increased consideration of urban green spaces in city planning and development. Landscape Development and Climate Change in Southwest Bulgaria aims to address some of the current limitations in our understanding of past Balkan climate and environment. High mountains and their ecosystems offer an outstanding opportunity for studies on the impact of climate change. The Balkan Mountains in Southeast Europe, situated at the transition between temperate and Mediterranean climate, are considered as very sensitive to historical and current global changes. The geoarchives lake sediment, peat and soil, long living trees and glaciers have been used to reconstruct the climatically-driven change of forest and treeline during the Holocene and the younger past. These processes are interrelated with complex ecological changes, as for example the seasonality of climate parameters. The landscape research approach with the analyses through multi-palaeo-geoecological proxies is new for the Balkans.

Grossraumige, schleichende Bodenkontaminationen kristallisieren sich als neue Herausforderung des Bodenschutzes heraus. Hier werden fur ausgewahlte Pfade und Beispielraume Wirkungszusammenhange fur Stoffflusse in Landschaftsraumen aufgezeigt. Besondere Beachtung verdienen hierbei landwirtschaftlich genutzte Flachen sowie weitraumig durch Industrie-Immissionen kontaminierte Areale. Grundsatzlich besteht fur solche Gebiete die Notwendigkeit, Zustandsanalysen, Gefahrdungsabschatzungen sowie Handlungs- und Nutzungskonzeptionen zu erarbeiten. Fur diese Zwecke stellt der Autor einen Handlungsrahmen vor, der bei entsprechenden Vorsorge- und Sanierungsmassnahmen eine konkrete Arbeitserleichterung bieten kann."
